piano

Duration:

6'

Note:

The goal of the etude is to maintain complete independence of each voice as they fade in and out of the texture. It should create the effect of walking down a city street or a forest trail where individual sounds enter and exit the range of your hearing at different intervals of time. The harmony is based on two sets of chords, each defining one of the two major sections, while the central section blends aspects of these sets together. The sets of chords cycle through meters (with one chord per bar) creating constantly varying textures where each chord is emphasized differently every time it returns. This creates a kind of large scale polyrhythm with six chords in the first set against five different meters and seven chords in the second set against six different meters.
