Note:
I wrote Winds of Centuries as I was reading Sigurd F. Olson’s book Listening Point. I have often tried to emulate natural phenomena in my music and Olson’s descriptions of geologic time-scales and the glaciers that shaped Northern Minnesota stood out to me. My piece parallels these slow-moving forces: the harmony develops gradually and systematically as the rhythms become more and more animated. By the end of the piece, the gentle winds of the opening are replaced with tension and a more activated texture as the performers fade in and out with pulsing rhythms—leaving only their footprints behind them.
