Note:
New to the violin as a player, Brush Strokes was my opportunity to explore the various sounds and extended techniques I could manage. The inspiration for the shape of this piece began after listening to orchestral sound-mass composers like Ligeti and Penderecki. The textures that they created move through thin and thick sections- almost like strokes of a paintbrush. My piece explores these types of sound-mass textures using only samples of my amateur violin playing. Along with ordinary bowed open strings, ponticello, and scratch tones, I found some percussive sounds that fit well within the texture. Brush Strokes is for 2-channel fixed media and is my first electronic piece.
